Why I like Wednesday.

So. Its 7am. I don’t usually get to see 7am. Its kinda like every other time of the day except everything is illuminated from the opposite side and it’s a little quieter. I usually end up liking mornings when I am forced to participate in them either because of some random early obligation like a background call-time or, as is the current case, an angry stomach. I forget (or choose not to care) that I can no longer eat and drink whatever I like late into the night, including-- but not limited to-- beer and buffalo wings. *Burble.*

Wednesday is not only the simplest day in my work week (which is Tuesday - Saturday) its also the most reliable. When the 9-to-5-ers are hitting their mid week hump, I get a little half day. Granted, because I a) work in upscale dining and b) can convince myself I don’t need much money, I spend a very minimal part of my day to day routine at work. Which, at this point in my life, suits me just fine. Today is a fine example, but let me explain something first:

My restaurant has kind of a dark, lounge-type feel to it. The bar is a little more than half the size of the restaurant and it’s a small bar. We don’t cater to children at all and we wont give you a half portion of anything. The drinks are expensive but they’re big and (usually) pretty strong. The servers wear ties but not name tags. If you pitch a fit about something petty and/or unreasonable you’re going to be told to go fuck yourself and not come back.

That’s after 5pm.

From 11:30am until 3pm, we are open for lunch, and its almost the complete opposite. Huge sandwiches and salads (that are way cheaper than they should be) and 3 flavors of iced tea. The sun streams into the huge windows as the old Jewish grandmothers demand free deserts because their french-fries weren’t crispy enough. We wear t-shirts, serve iced decaf coffees, and will turn the a/c down if you’re chilly. But, its such a short shift that no one really minds (well, we mind, but work is work) and I suppose we generate enough revenue to justify being open.

In a given week, I work 3 solo night shifts, one double shift, and one solo Wednesday lunch shift. For whatever reason Wednesday never changes. I always go to work at 11am, work for 3 hours, eat something, have a drink, then I leave. I don’t have to wake up early, I have roughly $30 that I didn’t have when I got out of bed, plus I have the whole rest of the evening to do whatever I want.

Which usually includes taking a nap
